Kylesku in three words

Remote after 10pm.

Favourite place near Kylesku Hotel

The little gorse forest on the left at the top of the road. You’re almost guaranteed to be there on your own and it smells of coconut. Below the bridge for sunset.

Favourite free-time activity

Dipping the loch for a cheeky wee swim cause it’s awesome and everyone should give it a go :) kayaking, riding my motorbike down the Drumbeg road cause it’s super twisty and winding.

Kylesku in three words

Rewarding, fast-paced, supportive.

Favourite place near Kylesku Hotel

It wouldn’t do any justice to the area to choose just one place, but given the number of times I’ve been on the summit, I’d say Glas Beinn or “grey mountain”. An hour’s walk to its foot from the hotel, a fairly short ascent and a stunning view of the monoliths in Assynt.

Favourite free-time activity

Exploring in whatever form suits my skills. Mostly backpacking trips, wild swimming. Because when you come to love the place deeply, you will do almost anything to celebrate and extend your connection to it.

Insider tip

A variety of interests/hobbies would be one of the keys to make the best of your time off in such a remote area: playing an instrument, reading, gardening. This is a place to cultivate, in whichever way it might be.

Pure dead brilliant!

Favourite place near Kylesku Hotel

Standing on the Skiag road driving home after a late shift and looking back towards Kylesku on a clear, starry night, feeling engulfed by the stars and Milky Way. It’s humbling to feel so tiny.

Favourite free-time activity

There’s a few: dinner with friends, dipping my toes in the sea and sitting reading by the fire. All of which ground me.

Give it the time and attention it deserves. It’s different every day!

Lochinver river loop. Beautiful walk, has everything you need. Loch, beach, trees. Sandwood Bay – great for guilt-free chilling cuz you need to walk 13k to get there and come back.

Kylesku in three words
Ever-changing, special, home
Favourite place near Kylesku Hotel

Upper Badcall, which is not far away from here, just between Kylesku and Scourie. You turn left and there’s just a beautiful view of the little islands and the ocean.

Favourite free-time activity

Walks and nature. Every day the sunset is different. You can be in one place and think you know the place, but it looks different in the rain.

Favourite food at Kylesku Hotel

Definitely the seafood, because it’s so fresh. For the guests, it’s nice when they sit outside having afternoon tea and can see the fresh delivery just hear on the jetty.
